Adapting to Google’s Campaign Asset Changes

Google is aggressively demanding that advertisers overhaul their workflows to regain control of their brands and ensure undeniable campaign stability.

The big change. Previously, brand assets such as logos and business names were kept in Asset Groups. Now, for campaigns with brand guidelines enabled, these assets are stored at the campaign level, under CampaignAsset.

API users should no longer depend on AssetGroupAsset for these assets. Instead, check the Campaign.brand_guidelines_enabled field to see if the change affects a specific campaign.

Why we care. Brand guidelines help advertisers control their logo and business name appearance while requiring updates to API setups. With brand guidelines set as default, advertisers achieve more consistent and controlled brand representation in ads.

Not adapting API integrations to the new structure may lead to broken workflows, missing brand assets, or inconsistent campaign results. Updating now helps maintain brand integrity and technical continuity.

What API users need to do. You need to step up your game, stop being passive consumers, and take charge of your experience. If you think you can just sit back and wait for the perfect solution, think again! It won’t land in your lap.

It’s time to roll up your sleeves. Dive deep into the documentation. Truly understand what the API can offer you. Embrace the challenge, only then will you unlock its full potential and gain a competitive edge. Don’t just follow the crowd; innovate and leave your mark!

Immediate action:
It’s time to stop dragging your feet and update your applications now!

  • Check whether brand_guidelines_enabled is true
  • Look for brand assets in CampaignAsset if so
  • Continue supporting AssetGroupAsset for legacy campaigns

Coming soon:
In API v21, brand guidelines will be mandatory no exceptions. But until that day, you’re left to navigate the chaos.

  • Default is disabled in v20 and earlier
  • You can enable guidelines manually from v19+ by setting Campaign.brand_guidelines_enabled = true

Migration options and timeline. Use CampaignService.EnablePMaxBrandGuidelines to turn on brand guidelines for current campaigns. Setting auto_populate_brand_assets = true will automatically use your best brand assets.

Note: brand guidelines, once enabled, can’t be disabled. Automatic migration is happening for campaigns with the same business name and logos across all asset groups. It will be completed by Oct. 30. Manual updates are recommended for more personalized migrations.

Bottom line: It’s time to wake up! If you manage PMax campaigns through the API, change this practice. Add brand asset storage at the campaign level. Prepare for the seismic API default shift in v21. Update your integration before you get left behind in the dust this fall.
